Lead Paint Removal

I’ve heard some experts say “there is no such thing as safe do-it-yourself lead paint removal.”  It is unfortunate when people we rely on for information are not aware of recent developments in the industry.  When you work with a wet process that eliminates dust during paint removal, and you render the lead paint non-hazardous on contact, then you have a very safe do-it-yourself lead paint removal project.  The technology that allows you to do this is new, so I wouldn’t expect everyone to know about it.  People in the industry need to educate themselves about new technologies.

Of course, you must follow certain lead safe work practices and avoid the hazards.  First, never use methylene chloride or other toxic paint strippers to remove lead paint.  Always use a safe non-toxic paint stripper, and make sure the paint stripper permanently turns the lead paint non-hazardous.  Some strippers will only do this temporarily with a high alkiline pH.  Just spraying water on the paint and scraping or sanding it off will expose you to hazardous lead dust and spread that dust and paint chips around your house or yard.

Always protect yourself by wearing gloves, goggles, and clothes that will cover your whole body.  For extra protection you can wear a respirator.  Also, cover the floor of your work area with a plastic sheet taped to the floor or wall to secure it.  Keep other people, especially children, out of your work area until you are completely done.  Clean your work area before and after paint removal.

You are not done until final clean up.  After you remove the lead paint and dispose of it, you must clean your clothes, tools, and work area thoroughly.  This final clean up may be the most important part of the job.

Desks

A reader wrote in to ask what kind of desks we’re going to be using for the new office.

The ergonomics experts always want you to have your feet flat on the floor. So you have to adjust your seat height first. Then, your arms are supposed to be horizontal while you’re typing. This means you need an adjustable-height keyboard.

Most of the adjustable height keyboard trays are extremely annoying… they’re floppy, flimsy, and limit the keyboard to one location. Therefore we decided to get desks where the entire worksurface can be raised and lowered.

Finally, a lot people praise the benefits of standing up for a part of the day, even if you spend the whole day at a computer, so we wanted desks where the worksurface could rise all the way to “counter height” so you could stand and work. And if you are going to be standing up and sitting down it’s best to have a desk with a pushbutton, electric motor so you don’t get lazy about doing it.

Eventually we settled on the Details adjusTables Series 7. We didn’t like the desk surface that those came with (with rounded corners and a chubby profile, it’s just too blah) so we ordered a custom desk surface from Steelcase with something called a knife edge profile. That makes the desk look paper-thin:

At the Beijing’s Bird’s Nest

I had my first opportunity to enter the Bird’s Nest this morning, and, in spite of all the hype and hyperbole, it didn’t disappoint.

I had been up close to the stunning steel mesh structure on a number of occasions, but emerging onto the main concourse, the view from the entrance looking directly onto the action in the sunken bowl below, it was impossible not to be impressed by the sheer beauty of the venue.

It helped that it was a brilliantly clear, sunny morning, with the Olympic flame burning against the backdrop of a deep blue sky overhead and the sweeping curves of the roof framing the action on the track and in the field down below.

The crowd around us were mainly Chinese, and there was a real family atmosphere - grandparents stuffing their grandchildren’s faces with food, couples waving flags and everyone cheering on the sole Chinese athlete on view - Song Dan, a 19-year-old no-hoper in the javelin. Needless to say, nobody was surprised when she failed to qualify. Two women sitting next to me spent the whole time talking about how fat the javelin competitors were. “She looks like she sits on the sofa and eats all day,” one said as she herself fished a yoghurt out of her bag. But they seemed to be enjoying themselves.

And, this being China, everybody - and I mean everybody - was posing for photograph after photograph, capturing images of their big Olympics day out.

There were international fans in the stadium - a few Union Jacks fluttered and a loud contingent of Americans cheered on their athletes in the 200 metres heats. But this was very much a Chinese occasion - the lack of high-profile events this morning meant tickets were both cheaper and easier to get hold of than those for the medal events in the evening, when fans from overseas make up a much larger proportion of the crowd.

The Chinese authorities carried out a high-profile crackdown on ticket touts yesterday, but it appeared not to have deterred the dozens of scalpers lined up outside the subway station.

Tickets for this morning’s session were changing hands for hundreds of dollars, with most transactions taking place in full view of police and security officials. Clearly the rows and rows of empty seats at venues in week one appear to have persuaded the authorities to turn a semi-blind eye to touting - they would rather have full stadia than expend time and energy clamping down on illegal profiteering.

I have been lucky enough to attend finals and semi-final events at many of the UK’s most high-profile stadia - the Millennium Stadium, Old Trafford, the Emirates and the new Wembley. None of them are a patch on the Bird’s Nest.

A stadium on this scale would be too expensive to construct in the UK - it cost £228 million to build; compare that with the almost £1 billion cost of the new Wembley. Thousands of migrant builders worked on the project round the clock for four years, again something that would be hard to replicate elsewhere, and its majesty will be of little consolation to the families of the builders killed during the construction process - the Chinese authorities admitted under pressure that two workers died; media reports had suggested that at least 10 were killed during the four-year building process, a figure rejected by China.

But as a venue for the climax to the world’s most high profile sporting competition, it will be hard to top - the blueprints for London’s Olympic centrepiece in Stratford look distinctly underwhelming by comparison.

I will be back in the Bird’s Nest on Friday night to watch the men’s and women’s 4×100 metre relays. I’m counting down the hours already.

Pinays of Payatas | Proud Workers Behind Rag2Riches Success

Several years ago, I was one of those many people who went to Payatas to help when the awful Payatas “garbage-slide” tragedy happened, we consoled the survivors as they try to understand why their love ones had to perish in that heartrending disaster that saw hundreds of women, men and children buried alive under a mountain of trash.

That is why I can’t help but feel happy, when I heard the news concerning the success of the Rags2Riches who was able to win in the US Enterprise Award, and learned that the Women of Payatas where the people behind the production.

Their story is really inspiring, they would collect scrap cloth from the garbage dump in payatas, weave them into rugs, before they would sell it to some unscrupulous middlemen who would earn at least P25 while these women would just earn P1 per rug. Thanks to some good hearted businessmen who formed the Rag2Riches who helped them to sell their products into a much better market like bazaar and malls, they where able to earn better income. And when Rajo Laurel joined the team, it became more exciting because theirs rugs were transformed into bag, purse and even wine holders.

From their meagre income of P10 a day, their income soared to at least P1,000 a week. Such an encouraging story of Pinay Achievements. It is just our wish that their business would continue to flourish.

Aim High Pinay of Payatas!
